The Afro Punk festival may only be 7 years old (it should be in 2nd grade but who knows what is going on…) but it has expanded to a level where it will probably outgrow or take over Brooklyn. By the time the festivals headliners ‘TV on The Radio‘ took the stage it was reported that more than 30,000 people were in attendance. It was an incredible festival marked with some memorable performances. I had the honor to cover the event for Jay-Z’s/S. Carter EntertainmentLife&Times website and was blown away with each performance that past. Enjoy the visuals from the performances.
The First time I met you I couldn’t forget you — Tony Tuff (this is the song I imagined played when they first met)
I meet Ron & Tanya at wedding I shot last summer. They were filming the ceremony and I was on stills. The entire day we danced around each other’s cameras hoping that we were not in each other’s shots (I know that my big butt was in a couple of their shots but that is what the power of editing is all about). We talked during our dinner break about attending their wedding and I immediately said yes because they were such a cool couple. They said it was in St. Lucia, ummm double yes! So before the wedding I wanted to have an engagement session with them. Enjoy
Last week we experienced an incredibly warm day in March that many a New Yorker enjoyed anticipating spring time, I was one of those folks. I am also one of those New Yorkers who skips many of the great NYC attractions (I have never been to the top of Rockefeller Center or The Empire State building, yes shame shame shame on me). So I decided to take a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge of course with my camera in tow. It was such an incredible night and has me actually anticipating the Spring time (for those who don’t know I am a HUGE fan of the Fall colors and the Winter cool).
Every parent has a special place in their heart for their child and his or her talent. We have all heard “My kid is (fill in the blank for a chosen talent).” In some instances it is true, their child’s talent is incredible and you can embrace it and be extremely supportive. In others we smile and provide moral support while holding our tongue. When I was approached about shooting Trey, his mother and I had a lengthy conversation about his personality, talent and direction of how we would approach the shoot. 2 hours later and many a story about Trey I wondered if I would be able to best represent this young man who is a student, actor, dancer, singer, rapper and jewelry designer.
So there is this thing called blogging (which I am bad at….shame on me) and is a great idea to share what I have been working on (which has been A LOT new site format), what has caught my eye (which is a bit) or where my camera has or will take me (which will be far getting my passport updated which expired last summer). There have been a number of incarnations of my blogging attempts starting with my first wordpress.com site (which is VERY different from wordpress.org). That was a bust simply because I didn’t have much to say and I was in the early stages of my photography career. I mean seriously who would want to see me post pictures of grass for the 1,000th time (if you raised your hand we could possibly be best friends and lets grab a pint together). My next swing at blogging was using blogspot. With this blog I never posted, why you ask? It was simply because I did not like the templates available…..yes I was so consumed with the lack of options that I did not utilize my blogspot. Where I began to take blogging seriously and consistently was me posting blackberry pictures and a 365 project (those projects are no joke and very time consuming I applaud any and everyone who has ever completed one….I will get you a pint).
If you are familiar with TED.com then you are aware of Sir Ken Robinson who is a brilliant educator and author. One of his speeches/videos/presentations still resonates with me 1 year later where he discusses the way traditional schooling killed or will kill our creativity. For the most part I do agree that many traditional schools do, unconsciously or consciously, dull down the imagination and creative thinking that happens with our children. Regarding our educational system in America he has many many valid points.
Like many photographers, when I first started on this journey behind the lens I thought it was all about the equipment. Get an expensive camera and ALL of your pictures will come out like Ansel Adams mixed with Gordon Parks with the flare of Annie Lebowitz. Of course I soon learned that was very very very wrong. My first batch of pictures were so basic that I questioned why I bothered with dropping so much money on a DSLR (Canon Rebel XTI BTW). I kept with it took the camera off of manual mode and started to experiment. However, I still had an itch to want a bigger camera because I just knew that it would increase my creativity, another thought that was not true about camera equipment.
Some people care too much its called love — Winnie the Pooh. When I shot Akin and Mary I could see that they are in love and enjoy each other so much. A lot of my time with them was spent just capturing them in their own moments of appreciating each other. It was like they hadn’t seen each other in a while and wanted to spend some quality time engulfing each other. Congrats to the one of the cutest couples I know.
Producers are at times the unsung heros’ of music in all genres (except hip hop because 80% of them scream their name on tracks or have the rapper shout them out). I got a call to shoot the BIO Magazine cover that featured Willie Green and it was fun to shoot with him…..especially the story about they who will remain nameless and blowing up the bathroom in the studio on multiple occasions. Check out more photos and an interview at BIO Magazine
